Department of Theory and History of Visual Arts provides educational process organized on the bachelor’s degree level as a system of general theoretical-professional preparation in the area of the history and theory of visual arts and aesthetics together with students’ language preparation and anatomy for visual artists.
Objective of the master’s degree level is deepening of theoretical knowledge and communication skills of students in the area of the history of Slovak and world visual arts of the second half of the 20th century with an emphasis on contemporary visual art tendencies in relation to social-cultural, political, philosophical and sociological contexts.
On the doctoral degree level the department participates in teaching of theoretical subjects and English language. The aim of a plural offer of the theoretical subjects is the strengthening of knowledge and both the communicative and interpretative skills of a doctoral candidate in the area of the Slovak and world art of the 20th and 21st centuries including the study of selected chapters of aesthetics, philosophy and methodology of artistic work.
Important part of the teaching process is scientific-research, as well as publication activity of the department members including exhibitions curatorship both in Slovakia and abroad. Scientific research activities are closely related to the teachers’ involvement in the Faculty development programs and research tasks for which fulfilment the grants are being obtained from the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic (KEGA), the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak republic as well as from various foundations. Also significant is an active participation of the pedagogical staff in both the home and international conferences connected with presentation of their scientific and research activities.
